Terry Mooney
WHS Class of 1965
Terry Mooney remembers moving to Weiser during the summer before his freshman year in 1961. He ended up playing Babe Ruth baseball that summer where he met some of the guys that were in his class. Like everyone who has been a part of an athletic team, he said that the connections he made with teammates definitely made the transition to a new school much easier. When football began in the fall, he said that he had only played flag football in the past, so it was a bit intimidating when he had to pick up his equipment in the gym. Thankfully, his older brother, who was playing football at the University of Idaho, was there to help him out.
He fondly remembers attending Weiser High School at the “Institute” where it felt like being a student on a small college campus. His fondest memories are related to being in the great Class of 1965 – a class full of kids who enjoyed each other’s company. Playing sports and attending social activities like dances were definitely highlights. He also remembers his first opportunity to become an actor, starring in the sophomore variety show as a cockroach.
After high school, Terry’s passion for athletics continued as he began his college career at the University of Idaho where he played freshman football. He then transferred to Treasure Valley Community College where he played defensive back on the football team and catcher on the baseball team. Ultimately, Terry earned his degree from Eastern Oregon College where he continued his football career as a defensive back.
Coming home to spend the next 39 years as a teacher, coach and athletic director in the Weiser School District is a source of immense pride for Terry. He instilled in his athletes the values of the “Weiser Way” – performing to the best of your abilities while exhibiting outstanding sportsmanship and outperforming expectations.
