Eric Grunke

WHS Class of 1997

Family & Foundation of Excellence

Eric is married to Leeanne Caroline Grunke (Zeznock) of Anchorage, AK. Together they are raising five children: Sam, Sadie, Hannah, Weston, and Audrey.

Eric, son of Jim and Judy Grunke (retired Weiser teacher), grew up a few miles north of Weiser on Grunke Road. In high school, Eric was a varsity athlete in cross country, basketball, and track. Additionally, Eric was a member of the marching band and choir all four years of high school, where he was known as a dedicated student and a young man of character. Like many who walked the hallways, he carried with him the Wolverine spirit of tenacity. However, it was his post-graduation experience that truly distinguished him. Eric chose the rigorous path of a United States Marine, eventually earning his wings and specializing in the AV-8B Harrier, one of the most demanding aircraft in the military arsenal.

Heroism in the Line of Duty

A defining moment for Eric occurred in March 2011. While serving as a Captain during Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya, Eric was called upon to lead a mission that would eventually make national headlines. An Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle had gone down in hostile territory, and the pilot was being actively hunted by enemy forces.

Under the cover of night and with the clock ticking, Eric assumed the role of on-scene commander, coordinating a complex rescue operation. To protect the downed pilot from approaching hostile vehicles, Eric deployed laser-guided munitions with surgical accuracy. He then scouted a precarious landing zone in a dry creek bed and guided an MV-22B Osprey to retrieve the pilot just minutes before capture.

His actions that night were the difference between a tragedy and a triumphant homecoming. For this uniquely qualified execution of duty, Eric was awarded the Alfred A. Cunningham Award as the Marine Aviator of the Year in 2012 – an honor that named him the top Marine pilot in the nation.

A Legacy of Service

Beyond the medals and the combat missions, Eric’s commitment to excellence continued as an instructor at Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One (MAWTS-1). There, he dedicated himself to mentoring the next generation of aviators, ensuring that the lessons he learned in the skies over Libya would protect future pilots for years to come.

Eric Grunke’s life story is a powerful reminder to every current Weiser student that there are no limits to what they can achieve. He went from the halls of Weiser High School to the cockpit of a fighter jet, saving lives and serving his country with distinction. He embodies the best of the Wolverine community: a hero who stayed cool under fire and a leader who never forgot the values of his hometown.
